This bottle was excavated from the historic Berkeley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia. The land for Berkeley was granted to a group of four men that included Reverend George Thorpe by the King of England, and was settled in 1619. This bottle likely dates to the mid-1700s and would have contained wine or beer. The shape of the bottle is “mallet” style, which originated in Europe but was popular in the Americas and has been found at a number of early settlements, like the present example.
