This is a standard example of a Dutch case gin bottle, the shape of the bottle indicating it was meant to be transported (likely overseas). The “flared lip” style of the opening was commonly seen in the colonial period. Records on distillers or distributors operating under Van Den Bergh & Co. are sparse, but a family of the same name produced butter and margarine in the Netherlands from the 1800s on – the company eventually merged with another group to form the now-massive Unilever brand. It is possible this is the same Van Den Bergh family whose name appears on this gin bottle, given the association between grocers and distillers, but more information is needed to be sure.
